North West Schools win big at National Participatory Educational Techniques (PET)



During a weeklong of national PET competition hosted by Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) held in Johannesburg – Gauteng Province in September 2019, the North West Province was represented well by five schools from four Districts of the Province. The five school participants were trained and guided by their educators/coaches to identify the road safety problems in the communities they residing in, perform the research and present solutions that could be implemented to improve road safety.

This programme helps the grade 10 and 11 learners to sharpen their presenting skills, listening skills, communications skills, research skills and build their confidence. Learners participating in the competition also play a role of road safety ambassadors at their schools and community with aim to change the attitude of the people towards road safety and encourage everybody to take it seriously and make a positive impact.

Schools from eight provinces in South Africa participated in 2019 national Participatory Educational Techniques competition, represented their provinces in the following categories, Rural Debate Category, Urban Debate Category and Disability Debate Category. Mpumalanga Province was not represented. This year’s competition was very tough because all schools came prepared and gunning for top positions and prices.

During these hard-hitting competition three schools from North West Province emerged in top positions of PET competition, where Sol Plaatjie Secondary School from Mahikeng in Ngaka Modiri Molema won first position in Urban Debate Category, and receive trophy for debating team, school, best speaker, coach/educator and iPad for each team member plus R5000 cheque donated by Drive Run Company for the winning Province.

Sunrise View Secondary School from Rustenburg in Bojanala District also put the Province on the Map when they secured themselves first position in Rural Debate Category, and awarded a trophy for debating team, school, best speaker, coach/educator and iPad for each team member.

Christiana School for the blind took second position in Disability Debate Category and received iPhone’s for each member of the team including the coach.

Deputy Minister of Transport Ms Dikeledi Magadzi expressed her excitement and gratitude to all coaches/educators, School Governing Bodies (SGB’s), parents to support the learners displayed tremendous debating skills and beautiful road safety models.

She recommeded that the road safety points and models of learners should be taken into consideration by relevant departments to insure that they are implemented to improve the road safety in the country to curb all unwanted incidents in national and rural roads. Minister Magadzi further thanked RTMC, Department of Safety, Department of Education and all stakeholders to make this event success and equip learners with a road safety knowledge.
